ADMINISTRATIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BCO 101: BUILDING CODE OFFICIAL (BCO) CERTIFICATION COURSE & EXAMINATION - NEWLY EXPANDED
Designed for the person who will be the administrator, manager, or director of their municipality’s or third-party agency’s code enforcement office, this two day course provides a comprehensive overview of the statute and regulations that comprise the Uniform Construction Code (UCC). Topics include:

  • Exemptions and Exclusions
  • Key Definitions and Adopted Codes
  • Training and Certification Regulations
  • Administrative and Enforcement Regulations
  • Amendments to the UCC

The course is an intensive review session prior to the certification examination, which is administered immediately after the course presentation. Students are expected to have studied the material prior to attending the course, and to be familiar with the overall structure and scope of the statute and regulations. Advance registration is required.

Although highly recommended, the course is not mandatory for certification, and prospective BCOs may elect to register for the examination only.

Examination
The examination is open-book with a two-hour time limit, and is administered by the Academy. During the exam test-takers may reference only bound, printed material. Students participating in the BCO course presentation are encouraged to take notes in these materials.

Exam results are usually available within three weeks, and the Academy will notify test-takers by mail of their results. Those that pass the BCO exam must apply to the Department of Labor & Industry for BCO certification.

Open to general audiences, but of greatest value to Building Code Officials, building inspectors, plans examiners, fire inspectors, building and remodeling contractors, sunroom installers, and swimming pool contractors, this one-day workshop discusses some of the key code issues related to typical summer construction and remodeling activities. As required in the Pennsylvania Manufactured Housing Improvement Act, PA Act 158 of 2004, this two-day course provides the required training for those who seek certification as an installer of new manufactured homes in Pennsylvania.

Designed for historic preservationists, rehab specialists, design professionals and code officials, this one-day class focuses on the application of the International Existing Building Code to the rehabilitation of existing and historic buildings and structures. The Academy will provide:
