8:45 Habitable Attic Allowance and Bonus Rooms: The 2009 IRC contains new requirements for "habitable attics." This new term will allow IRC compliant buildings to be built with 5 floors (counting the basement) with a habitable attic or loft. The application of "habitable attics" is less clear when applied to bonus rooms. This session will explore this new requirement and discuss code compliance and enforcement challenges.

9:15 Decks:  Decks are considered simple structures, yet deck related failures are responsible for a substantial number of injuries and deaths each year.  This program will discuss the root causes of these problems and it offers real world solutions including new 2009 IRC requirements for ledger board attachment, lateral support, and concerns with brick and stone veneer.

3:00 Duct Testing & Blower Doors:  Air leakage testing for the building enclosure and duct systems is now required by 2009 IRC. Blower door testing is an option for builders and duct testing is now required.  This will have major changes on the way we design, build and inspect our houses and HVAC systems.

Designing and Inspecting Residential Sprinkler Systems Program

This full day program will provide a detailed overview of residential sprinklers designed to NFPA 13-D. The program will include a discussion of the following:

  • Where sprinkler heads are required
  • Piping types
  • Configurations and sizing
  • Municipal water supply
  • Private well systems
  • Storage tanks and pumps
  • General design procedures including prescriptive pipe sizing
  • Sprinkler head requirements and selection
  • Proper installation
  • Rough in and final inspection procedures
