Since Hurricanes Irene & Sandy and Tropical Storm Lee, the country has been experienced devastating flooding in the past few years. As a flood-prone state, local government officials and residents of Pennsylvania need to be fully aware of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the roles and responsibilities of local government. With the increased costs of flood insurance premiums and the future impacts of both the Biggert Waters Act of 2012 and the subsequent National Homeowners’ Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014, there is a FEMA program and there are steps that a municipality can undertake to provide discounts for NFIP Policy holders in their municipality. FEMA’s Community Rating System program will be discussed during the training session. An overview of what a municipal government can do to enter into the CRS program and how it provides discounts to NFIP policy holders in their municipality will also be discussed.
